Port Hills Geotechnical Sectors

Shortly after the 22 February earthquake a group of geotechnical engineers (the Port Hills Geotechnical Group) was set up as part of the Civil Defence response to assess landslide and rockfall risk to engineering lifelines and life safety of residents. This included reconnaissance of affected areas of the Port Hills, responding to requests from residents concerned about the safety of their property, assisting the rapid response and Operation Suburb teams with geotechnical assessments for red placarding, and investigating mitigation options for areas of red placarded houses.

The Port Hills Geotechnical Group divided the Port Hills into nine geographic sectors and assigned each one a "sector leader", who would be primarily responsible for assessments and work in that sector. The sectors leaders and the sector boundaries are shown on the accompanying map.

It is not part of the Group's brief to provide site specific geotechnical reports for properties on the Port Hills, and the Group agreed that sector leaders would not undertake private jobs within their sector. This means that the sector leader can provide a review or check of private work done within the sector. If geotechnical engineers are engaged to undertake private work on the Port Hills they are asked to contact the sector leader for the area so that they are aware of the work, and so they can let the engineer know of any global issues in the area of the property.
